How this calculator works
Federal income tax: your salary, less pre-tax 401(k) contributions and the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly, $24,150 head of household), taxed at the 2026 brackets.
Social Security is 6.2% of pay up to $184,500 in 2026; Medicare is 1.45% of all pay, plus 0.9% on wages over $200,000. Pre-tax 401(k) contributions don't lower these.
State income tax uses each state's 2026 brackets, standard deduction and personal exemption or credit, as compiled by the Tax Foundation.
The year's tax is spread evenly across your paychecks, which is what withholding on a standard W-4 aims for.
What it assumes
- Standard deduction, no other income, credits or itemised deductions. Credits such as the child tax credit lower the tax further.
- State payroll insurance (disability or paid leave, in some states) and most local income taxes aren't included; add a local rate if you pay one.
- Actual withholding follows your W-4 and your employer's payroll system, so paychecks can differ by a few dollars.
Questions people ask
How much is taken out of a $75,000 paycheck?
For a single filer paid every two weeks in a state with no income tax, about $515.67 a paycheck: federal income tax plus Social Security and Medicare, leaving $2,368.94. State income tax, where there is one, comes on top.
What are the 2026 federal tax brackets?
10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37%. For single filers, 12% starts at $12,400 of taxable income, 22% at $50,400 and 37% at $640,600.
What is FICA?
Social Security and Medicare taxes: 7.65% of pay for most workers (6.2% + 1.45%), with Social Security stopping at $184,500 of wages in 2026. Your employer pays the same again.
Which states have no income tax?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington and Wyoming. Washington taxes only capital gains, and New Hampshire's tax applied only to interest and dividends and has ended.
Does a 401(k) lower my taxes?
Traditional 401(k) contributions come out before federal and most state income tax, so each dollar you put in costs less than a dollar of take-home pay. They don't lower Social Security or Medicare tax.
