Editorial standards
Every figure on RateHerald has to be something you can check. These are the rules we hold ourselves to.
Accuracy
- Every figure comes from a document we name: the issuer's page, its pricing terms, its card agreement filed with the CFPB, or the CFPB's credit card survey.
- We keep the sentence each figure came from and show it. Where there's no exact sentence, the receipt says so.
- A figure flagged as uncertain isn't published until it's checked. A card without its annual fee isn't published at all.
- Each card shows the date its figures were last checked. The seal turns grey after a week and says "Rechecking" after a month.
Software and people
Software collects the documents and reads the figures out of them, including language models that read rates-and-fees tables. Each figure is checked against its source sentence, and figures that don't match, or that look wrong, go to a person before they're published. Corrections are made by people, and listed in public.
Independence
No company pays us, and none can pay to change what we show or how we sort it. Lists are sorted by a measure we name on the page. See our pledge and how we make money.
What we don't publish
- Star ratings, reviews or "best" labels without a published method behind them.
- Approval odds, or "pre-approved" claims.
- Figures read from pages we're not sure we may use, until our lawyers have reviewed them.
Mistakes
If you find one, use "Report a problem" on any figure or read how corrections work.
