How this calculator works
Federal: income less the 2026 standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 joint, $24,150 head of household) is taxed at the 2026 brackets, 10% to 37%. The child tax credit, $2,200 a child under 17, comes off the tax; up to $1,700 a child is paid even beyond the tax you owe.
State: each state's 2026 brackets, standard deduction and personal exemption or credit, as compiled by the Tax Foundation.
Your bracket is the rate on your next dollar; your effective rate is total tax divided by income, always lower, because each bracket only taxes the income inside it.
What it assumes
- Standard deduction, wages as income, and no other credits. Itemized deductions, capital gains, self-employment tax and credits such as the earned income credit change the result.
- Social Security and Medicare aren't income tax; the paycheck calculator includes them.
Questions people ask
How much federal income tax will I pay on $75,000?
A single filer with the standard deduction owes about $7,670 for 2026, 10.2% of income, even though the top bracket reached is 22%.
What tax bracket am I in?
For 2026, single filers are in the 22% bracket from $50,400 of taxable income and 24% from $105,700; joint filers at twice those amounts up to the 32% bracket. Taxable income is income after the standard deduction.
What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?
The marginal rate is what the next dollar of income is taxed at. The effective rate is your total tax as a share of your income, which is lower because lower brackets tax the first part of your income at 10% and 12%.
How much is the child tax credit for 2026?
$2,200 for each child under 17 with a Social Security number, and $500 for other dependents. It shrinks by $50 for each $1,000 of income over $200,000 ($400,000 joint). Up to $1,700 a child is refundable.
Does moving into a higher bracket reduce my take-home pay?
No. Only the income above the bracket threshold is taxed at the higher rate, so a raise always leaves you with more after tax.
